Favorite cosplay and why: My favorite cosplay to date is Black Panther General Okoye. Okoye is from the Marvel comics and movie of the same title, Black Panther. She is the commander of the Dora Milaje, an elite group of female bodyguards for the Black Panther. Played by actress Danai Gurira, I knew when I saw the movie that I had to bring this intelligent, powerful, beautiful and fiercely loyal character to life.
How long you’ve been cosplaying: This is my fourth year cosplaying.
Do you create your own or have it commissioned: I do not make my own costumes and I have so much admiration for those that do.
Favorite thing about Cosplaying: My favorite thing about cosplaying is getting to share the experience with my friends. Four years ago, I was solo and I only cosplayed one night of the convention. Looking back on it, I was happy, but I am happier now. My cosplay family has grown and I am thankful.
Favorite Experiences Cosplaying: My best cosplay experience happened this year. Okoye was extremely well received, much more so than I anticipated. For the first time in my cosplaying history, people gave me little gifts when they saw me: badge ribbons, cards, buttons and the like. That has never happened to me before and I was totally blown away by the enthusiasm and generosity -- I had no idea that people did such things for cosplayers. I am so grateful, but I have no idea who any of them were, so if you are reading this: you are so awesome, and thank you!
Next convention: I have nothing planned for the rest of the year.
Advice for new cosplayers: My advice to new cosplayers is to be flexible because everything will not always go as planned and remember to have fun!!
