Meet Nova Kat Cosplay!

What's Your Favorite Cosplay and Why?

My current favorite is Lara Croft.  The reason is it was the first time I dived into prop making and I handmade 95% of the props for that cosplay.  I was surprised I could do it!  lol  It was also the first time I tried my hand at weathering clothes and doing makeup in a way to make me look dirty and bruised.  I went into uncharted territories and made it through alright though!  Woot!

How Long Have You Been Cosplaying?

Technically I started in 2014 with my very first version of Lara Croft for a Halloween party.  I only became really serious with cosplaying in 2017 and now I can't stop.  I've got tons of plans yo!  lol

Do You Make Your Own or Have It Commissioned?

I mostly create my cosplays myself.  I have, however, commissioned a few lovely pieces for some of my cosplays before.  There's absolutely no shame in having parts or even a whole cosplay commissioned, plus it's awesome to support small businesses!

What's Your Favorite Thing About Cosplaying?

I enjoy all of it - the thrill of the hunt for the perfect fabric/material/clothing, the learning process of how to create the cosplay and the joy of completing a cosplay.  My #1 favorite thing is being able to step into the character's shoes and portray them - to practice getting their facial expressions and attitude/mood just right and portray the character in photos for example.  I've always wanted to get into acting and this lets me do so. :D

Next Convention:

I'm aiming to go to the Big Lick Comic Con in 2019.

Any Advice for New Cosplayers?

Do you have any for me?  I'm still learning yo!  lol  My advice is to start with something small so you won't overwhelm yourself.  Do your research on how to best create your cosplay - look at reference photos, check out how other cosplayers created the same thing (a lot of times there are tutorial on youtube and forums on how to make it), don't be afraid to ask other cosplayers if they would share where they found materials/props/etc, keep a list of what you need and what steps you have to do.  Also check out facebook to see if there is a group of cosplayers of the particular character - they share resources and tips on there a lot of the time.  Have a dream cosplay you can work towards.  I have several dream cosplays I'm working on acquiring the skills to create them myself.  Also don't compare yourself to others - there is only one you in this world and nobody can do you like you can!  It's easy to get intimidated by others and think that you'll never measure up but you shake that feeling off and just do the best that you can and be proud of yourself!  I know I'd be proud of you! :)
